There is some bad news for parents of high school students. We are all aware of binge drinking but a new study came out last week stating some of the binge drinkers have moved into the extreme class. Five or more drinks in a row will make you a binge drinker but about 5.6% of the high school seniors in this study have 10, 15, or more drinks in one session. Overall, binge drinking has been going downward each year but the extreme drinkers have not lost any ground. Their statistics remain the same every year. The survey done by the University of Michigan had 16,000 high school seniors filling out questionnaires, including the two weeks prior to the study. USA Today published some of the findings that appear in a recently released medical journal. Boys are much more likely to be binge drinkers than girls especially in extreme levels. White students are significantly more at risk for this dangerous behavior than black students. If the students live in a rural area the odds are they are more likely to participate. And, seniors who drank 15 or more drinks at a time are significantly more likely to use other drugs. The answer, according to the experts is once again in the hands of better parenting. We must, as parents set “clear rules and consequences for underage alcohol consumption.” Oh, and we must practice what we preach. Limit our own alcohol intake and don’t drink and drive. Makes sense to me.Binge Drinking
