So the question is should a 157 year old tradition in New York City, basically for tourists go by the wayside?  If newly elected Mayor Bill de Blasio has his way the horse drawn carriages that now number about 220 in the Big Apple are gone in short order. “We are going to quickly and aggressively move to make horse carriages no longer part of the landscape in New York City.  They are not appropriate to the year 2014.  It’s over.  So just watch us do it now.”  This guy means business.  He wants to replace the horses with electric cars that will have a vintage look.  Of course, the demand by tourists will go down.  I have had a few rides on some of my earlier trips to New York City with the family.  They seemed OK at the time but you can’t tell me it isn’t tough on the horses in the extreme heat and cold.  Of course, the feedback from the drivers and owners is this is a part of the history of New York and de Blasio should leave everything in place.  The drivers say they follow the regulations of the American Society for the Prevention and Cruelty to Animals.  I am sure they do or the ASPCA would be all over them.  There has been a love affair with the horse carriages in Manhattan but with the amount of congestion, heat, cold, and traffic Mayor de Blasio probably is making the right decision for the horses.  Am I wrong on this one?  What do you think?Horse Drawn Carriages in New York
