Some disturbing statistics came out recently regarding job burnout with United States employees. The Conference Board, which is a non-profit think tank found that, and I’m quoting, “The majority of Americans continue to be unhappy at work.” It certainly surprises me that in a survey covering 5,000 households only 33% of those people responding feel that they are satisfied with their workload. Another research company called ComPsych backs that up. Their research shows that just showing up for work, rather than accomplishing basic responsibilities was the top priority cited by 22% of workers. Obviously, something is wrong here. Let me pass along several of ComPsych’s 2012 findings. It is an eye-opener. 63% of workers cite high levels of work related stress and don’t feel they are in control. 39% say their workload is the top cause of stress. 46% cite stress and personal relationship issues as the most common reason for absences. That is ahead of medical reasons. A neuropsychologist from ComPsych studying this issue said, “A significant portion of the American workforce is burned out and that’s rising.” I wish I had the answers but I don’t. Somewhere in this slow to recover economy we have to improve company and worker relationships. These studies by the Conference Board and ComPsych show the American worker might be near the breaking point and productivity is headed to be at even lower levels. It has to stop.
