The death of Robin Williams by suicide a couple of weeks ago brought back bad memories for me. When my oldest son was 15 he spent a night with a friend at the friend’s house.  He ended up wrestling with his buddy who had decided to shoot himself with a rifle.  My son had no idea he was suffering from depression.  Luckily, for my family, the young man didn’t shoot my son and locked himself in the bathroom before he pulled the trigger.  His parents heard the shot and came downstairs.  Last week, the common causes of death in 2010 were released and suicide ranks higher than car accidents, prostate cancer, and leukemia.  We have found ways to help those in car accidents with technology such as air bags, guard rails, and seat belts.  Those suffering from cancer now have longer life spans with new technology.  That is not the case with suicide.  One new technology being discussed is to have a carbon monoxide sensor in vehicles that would shut a car ignition off at a certain level.  News media reports last week show that in the last ten years people in their 60’s have had a 30% increase in suicide.  Suicide remains a stigma in this country and the stigma has hindered the focus on solving this horrible problem.  The takeaway from Robin Williams is to watch your family and friends closely and ask for help. Depression is a life-threatening illness.Suicide
