I was watching a 1950’s movie the other day with my son and he asked if I noticed the amount of smoking going on among the characters. He was right, everyone had a cigarette. Growing up, I remember the old Humphrey Bogart and Edward G. Robinson gangster films. Everyone smoked all the time. And, of course most those actors died young. I don’t remember Bogie without a cigarette. He died in 1957 at age 57 of cancer of the esophagus. In 2012, the Surgeon General concluded that there is a casual relationship between depictions of smoking in the movies and smoking initiation among young people. Between 2005 and 2011 movies had a decline in the appearance of tobacco incidents in PG-13 rated movies. But last year the incidents per movie jumped 54% from 2011. This country is star struck. When Tom Cruise put on Ray-Ban sunglasses in Top Gun several years back, he sold them off the sheves. Here is an extraordinary number about tobacco impressions delivered by PG-13 rated movies last year. In-theater tobacco impressions were 14,800,000,000 but who is counting. These figures were from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 48.3 million people smoke which is 19% of the adult population. But here is the real problem, each day 4,000 persons younger than 18 smoke their first cigarette and, each day, about 1,000 persons younger than 18 become new daily cigarette smokers. A smoking friend of mine said one time that, “oh well, we all are going to die.” My response is the quality of death. For the last ten years of his life, he didn’t smoke but emphysema finally took him out and it wasn’t pleasant.Smoking Impressions
