Warm Start to October, Cooler with Showers on Friday

We kick off October with a very warm afternoon in the Heartland under a mix of clouds and sun through the afternoon. A southerly breeze will aid temperatures, with forecasts reaching the upper 80s to lower 90s.

Most of the day will stay dry on Thursday, with increasing chances for showers and thunderstorms along a passing front by Friday morning. The latest run of StormCast shows a line of showers and storms moving through the area Friday morning and early afternoon.

Severe weather potential is expected to remain minimal with Friday’s precipitation. With drier weather next week, our 7-day forecast rain totals remain around an inch through the viewing area.

By Thursday morning, temperatures will fall to the upper 60s to lower 70s. We expect to see lows in the lower 50s for the start of October.

Overcast skies and southerly winds will help keep warmth trapped in through the overnight in Cape Girardeau. Temperatures are forecast to drop to the lower 70s.

High temperatures will continue in the 90s when most of us would rather have temperatures closer to the 70s. Winds remain strong and out of the south, gusting up to 20 miles per hour.

While the forecast keeps us a couple of degrees short of a record high, we could still make history in Cape. Should we reach 90 degrees, that would only be the third time in history with a high of 90 degrees or warmer on October 1.

Forecast highs return closer to where they should be on Friday, back down to the middle and upper 70s. With the cooler weather will come the chance of showers and a few thunderstorms.

High temperatures remain in the lower 70s for the majority of the extended forecast. Plenty of sunshine should make for pleasant conditions to spend time outdoors by the start of next week.
