Cape Girardeau church hosts Back-to-School Bash for community

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – Over the past weeks, back-to-school bashes have been in full swing.

Saturday, Grace Church put on its big bash to help the community as well as anyone from surrounding school districts who needed back-to-school supplies.

“It’s really heart to give back to the community and find a need and meet that need every single year and so,” said Brett Smith, Grace Church Paster.

Grace Church started its Back-to-School Bash last year where about 100 families came out.

This year the number only grew, showing the community’s need for these items.

“This year we opened registration. We planned for 300 or so but we actually had around 600 students registered to get a backpack school supplies,” said Smith.

Some of the services offered were free haircuts provided by the Trendsetters School of Cosmetology. Student stylist Grace Amerson says it was a great way for her school to gain experience.

“Different kind of hair textures and you know just different opportunities to do stuff. So it was really exciting to me,” said Amerson.

Amerson also says she also likes helping the kids look good for the first day of school.

“To come back and get free stuff and get them dolled up or looking good is very important to me. I want all kids to feel the same and nobody should be left out,” said Amerson.

Pastor Smith says this is just the first step in their plan to help the community meet its needs.

“We’re just getting started on the work we need to do in our community to really meet the needs that we’re really facing in our community today,” said Smith.
