SEMO Women’s Soccer celebrates Senior Day

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – Gabby Gsheidmeier remembers watching her first Senior Night as a freshman at Southeast Missouri State.

“I was like, ‘Dang, Senior Night is emotional,’” she said. “They were crying, and seeing that, I was like, ‘Dang, Senior Night’s going to be emotional when it’s mine, but oh, that’s a ways away.’”

But it wasn’t as far away as she first thought.

“The seniors were like, ‘No, it’s going to be here in the blink of an eye,’ and I was like, ‘Oh, I’ve got time.’ Literally the blink of an eye. It’s today, and I’m like, ‘I was just a freshman yesterday, like I was coming in to SEMO,’” she said.

Gsheidmeier and the other three seniors were honored before Sunday’s game against Morehead State.

Defender Mariah Mannino said the game she has put her blood, sweat and tears into will forever hold a place in her heart.

“Everyone moves on and has their future ahead of them, but it’s always going to be something that I’m always going to remember, just being here every day, all day, and then all of a sudden, you’re just not,” she said.

Fifth year senior Morgan McCourt said being a part of this program for five years has allowed her to meet some of her closest friends.

“I know I have a lot of people I can rely on for the rest of my life,” she said. “Definitely going to be a lot of weddings that we’re going to have to go to. Just the stuff outside of soccer, especially, before practices, bus rides, plane rides sometimes. It’s just the most fun that you could have in college.”

Shall we say, best friends forever?

“I know for sure these are going to be my friends forever,” senior Natalie Miller said. “Everyone is so amazing, and getting to play soccer with everyone and spending so much time travelling, you really get to know everyone, like everything about them, so I’m definitely going to be friends with them forever.”

The Redhawks tied the Eagles, 1-1, moving their overall record to 6-5-2 and Ohio Valley Conference record to 2-1-2.
