More rounds of storms possible through the weekend

This afternoon there’s potential for some strong to severe storms to get going. Mainly, these would be seen across southern Missouri and our southern coverage areas, along the Arkansas and Tennessee state lines. A Slight (Level 2 of 5) risk is in place through this region. Damaging winds and heavy rain will be the main threats.

The next few hours are when most of this is expected to unfold. Storm cast shows a boundary sweeping through, along which some storms will be possible into the early evening on Sunday. After recent rains, those areas could be experiencing some patchy fog come Sunday morning.

As we’ve been mentioning, though, this will not be our only chance for rain and thunderstorms through the rest of the weekend. Come Sunday, a cold front is set to swing by. With the potential for more scattered storms by the late afternoon and evening, a Slight (Level 2 of 5) risk now includes just about everyone. The timing of this will largely be dependent on how quickly that front arrives.

With this event still a little way out, models suggest a range of solutions. Stormcast (pictured below) is likely showing storms arriving too late than what we are thinking, but the coverage in this model is a bit better. Sunday will be a day to monitor the weather, especially with any outdoor plans.

With the recent Heat Advisory on Saturday, possible heat index readings across our area could still be as high as the upper 90s and low 100s for Sunday afternoon. That being said, we are expected to see some more comfortable conditions after the cold front, with Monday looking to be the day to cash in.

Depending on what downpours we see and where, the Skeeter Meter ranges for Sunday. If you miss out on some of the moisture, it’ll still largely be another hot and humid summer day. Humidity is expected to back off slightly through Monday and Tuesday, with drier weather expected.

After that, by midweek the chances for rain return. Still cooler than average for much of the forecast, highs will be in the middle to upper 80s toward the middle of August.
