Severe storms possible on Tuesday

Most of the FOX 23 coverage area has been upgraded to an enhanced (Level 3/5) risk for severe weather, including Cape Girardeau. This means that we now have greater confidence in seeing several strong to severe storms as we head into the afternoon.

A Severe T’Storm Watch is in effect until 4 p.m. Tuesday for just about all of our coverage area. There is a chance that the Watch may need to be extended to expire later in the day. At the very least, everyone should be prepared in case severe weather strikes during the afternoon.

Severe Tstorm Watch

Damaging winds and large hail will be the primary concerns. Isolated instances of very large hail up to 2″ is possible, along with scattered damaging winds up to or in excess of 75 mph. We cannot rule out a tornado or two as well. Very heavy rain is also possible, which could lead to flooding concerns through Tuesday night.

The severe weather may end up arriving in a few waves. The first wave approaches our western counties in southeast Missouri around lunchtime. The severe weather threat will persist into the afternoon.
