Wind Chill Warning/Winter Storm Watch for Thursday (12/21/22)

 

Cold temperatures are expected for Thursday with dangerous wind chills. A Wind Chill Warning was issued Wednesday morning that will go into effect Thursday night by 6 p.m. and go through 12 p.m. Friday. Wind chills on the order of -15 to -25° are possible with low temperatures hovering around 0° for Thursday night. Winds will be anywhere from 15-20 mph and gusting up to 35 mph.

Frostbite in these conditions can happen in as little as 30 minutes. Protective layers and limiting time outdoors will be important as you prepare for the days ahead.

A Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Thursday afternoon through late Thursday night. Heavy snow is possible with this system as a cold front sweeps through, with total accumulations anywhere from 1-3″ possible. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for counties including Reynolds and Madison in southeast Missouri.

The timing of the strongest gusts will be following the front by Thursday evening. We’ll feel the arctic air rush in and with winds like these, it will not take much to drop wind chills through Friday.

One possible scenario (below) shows everyone receiving almost 4-5 inches of snow, but this is on the higher end and less likely. Snowflakes can fracture easily in strong winds, so the chance for less snow is more likely.
