Winter is on its way (12/18/22)

Despite already being below average for temperature, arctic air is on its way with the beginning of winter officially starting on Wednesday. Temperatures are trending toward the 40s at the beginning of the week, but the confidence along with model guidance is high that we will see temperatures plummet toward the single digits by the end.

Not only that, but there’s some chances to see snow right before Christmas, too.

Sunday evening will have temperatures hovering in the low to mid 20s overnight with cloud cover increasing ahead of Monday.

In our “Java Jumpstart to the Week”, temperatures will warm up to the upper 30s by lunchtime. To start Christmas week, we’ll see much of our area make a run for the 40s, but normal high temperatures are usually in the mid 40s. Monday will be cloudy, with more precipitation possible by Wednesday night into Thursday.

Flurries are possible through the northern portions SEMO and southern Illinois, but the chances are small due to the dry air in the lower levels of the atmosphere.

The timing of a strong cold front that will bring arctic air behind it is what brings highs from the 30s to the teens by Friday. Low temperatures will be barely holding on to values above zero, but factoring in the wind, it’ll feel much colder. Then, heading into the holidays, temperatures will try to somewhat recover.
