Commemorating Flag Day: Reflecting on the symbolic importance of the stars and stripes

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) — As the nation observes Flag Day this week, local residents are sharing their perspectives on the significance of this important day in American history.

Bill Eddleman, Coordinator at the Cape Girardeau Research Center of the State Historical Society of Missouri, emphasized the importance of recognizing the flag and its profound meaning.

He says, “Flag Day is a day for us to recognize the flag and what it means. As many people know, the flag represents a lot of sacrifice over many years, shaping the United States into what it is today.”

Eddleman, through his own research, discovered ancestors who fought in previous wars, which deepened his understanding of the flag’s significance and the importance of their sacrifice.

Eddleman says the best way to celebrate Flag Day is by adhering to the flag’s code of conduct.

“It includes not leaving it out in the rain unless it’s an all-weather flag. It includes getting it in at night and displaying it so that it doesn’t touch the ground,” said Eddleman.

Eddleman expressed his hope that others also recognize the importance of Flag Day and develop a sincere appreciation for this national holiday.

“Holidays and commemorations like Flag Day seem to have fallen out of popular consciousness for many people, and we need to encourage individuals to think about Flag Day and think about what it means,” said Eddleman.
