Substitute teacher training coming to CTC, Cape Girardeau Public Schools to benefit
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – “We very rarely get all of our jobs filled.”
Those jobs being substitute teacher jobs, and Cape Girardeau Public Schools Deputy Superintendent Brice Beck said not having subs to fill those jobs puts added stress on other teachers.
“That leads to our staff really having to pick up the extra load on covering classes throughout the day,” he said.
And that task often comes at the expense of their prep period.
“Instead of getting that time to prepare or get caught up on stuff that they’re needing to do for their normal classes, now they’re filling in teaching another class, so they’re not getting any of that done in place,” he said.
But the upcoming substitute teacher training, which will take place from August 1 through 3 at the Cape Career and Technology Center, will help add more substitute teachers into the fold.
Beck said subbing not only is a good source of supplemental income, but…
“It’s a way for them to give back to the communities,” Beck said. “The majority of people who come in and sub consistently love working with children, and that’s a good way for them to get to interact with the students that are coming through our elementary schools and working their way up to the middle school and junior high.”
And so, this training seems like a win-win.
“I feel like obviously the more people we can get certified, to get their sub certificate through DESE, hopefully more and more sub jobs are getting covered throughout the district,” Beck said.
