Man facing several charges after pedestrian killed in crash in Mount Vernon

MOUNT VERNON, Ill. (KBSI) – A man faces charges after a deadly crash in Mount Vernon late Sunday night.
Mitchell L. Sharp, 30, faces charges of reckless homicide, aggravated reckless driving, leaving the scene of a fatal accident, improper lane usage and aggravated driving under the influence.
The Mt. Vernon Police Department Dispatch Center received 911 calls on Sunday, July 30 around 8:26 p.m. regarding a rollover traffic crash in the 600 block of Main Street. Additional reports indicated the vehicle had struck a pedestrian and a home.
The Illinois State Police, Mt. Vernon Fire Department, Mt. Vernon Police Department, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and Litton’s Ambulance responded to the scene.
Officers were told the driver of the vehicle had ran from the scene westbound without clothing on. Officers found Sharp in the 800 block of Main Street.
The eighteen-year-old female pedestrian was determined to be dead by medical personnel on scene. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene.
Sharp was taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries. He was transferred to an Evansville, Indiana hospital.
The Mt. Vernon Police Department received notification that Sharp was able to be released from the hospital early July 31. Officers from the Mt Vernon Police Department responded and took Sharp into custody.
Sharp was taken to the Jefferson County Justice Center.
Investigators worked with the Jefferson County States Attorney’s Office. A full review of charges will be conducted by the States Attorney’s Office. Bond is to be set.
The Illinois State Police are leading the investigation into the crash. An Illinois State Police Accident Reconstructionist responded to the scene. The Mt. Vernon Police Department Detective Division is assisting with the criminal investigation.
