Alma Schrader’s fourth grade class commemorates 9/11

CAPE GIRARDEAU Mo. (KBSI) – 4th grade students at Alma Schrader Elementary School in Cape Girardeau learned about the tragic events of 9/11.

Mrs. Young ensures her students understand the impact 9/11 had on the U.S. by showing clips and real debris left behind after the collapse of the Twin Towers.

“The lesson we’re doing today on 9/11 is something that’s been important to me since the day that it happened,” said Mrs. Young

According to Young, she also recalls America having a false sense of security before the event took place.

“We’ve got our eyes open in a big way,” Young added.

Students also empathize with the victims of the event by writing letters on how the tragedy changed the lives of many.

“This is so important to us because this happened on a date that really changed our lives,” said Serenity Johnson who is one of Mrs. Young’s 4th graders.

With it now being the 22nd anniversary, classes in many local schools take time to understand and commemorate the disheartening memory that today’s date brings.
