POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. (KBSI) – The Mules Café will be re-opening for the last time to the public at the R-I Administrative Building this week.

The culinary arts class is moving to Poplar Bluff Technical Career Center halfway through the year in the state-of-the-art Culinary Arts Center, which is under construction.

The new cafe will have a pizza oven, indoor smoker and othe equipment.

The Mules Café is located at 1110 N. Westwood Blvd. and is open to the public from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday and Friday each week unless school is closed, according to Poplar Bluff School District. Anyone who wishes to carryout is asked to call 573-785-5768 a day in advance.

Chef Moon transitioned the Café from a buffet to a full-service cooking for students to gain experience in managing a menu.

Additionally, Moon transitioned the Senior Showcase from designing a lunch menu to creating individual menus for mock restaurants for the public to sample. The goal is to bring in restaurateurs to potentially recruit the soon-to-be graduates, according to Poplar Bluff School District.

Participants of the program earn a two-year certification through ProStart. Students must complete 400 hours and half can be earned at Mules Café. The other half can be earned in a partnership with Chartwells and internships at local restaurants.

In June, ground was broken on the future 3,240-square-foot facility, which will connect to the existing 1,400-square-foot staff breakroom on the main building behind the high school on Oak Grove Road, according to the Poplar Bluff School District. The building was designed by Dille and Pollard Architecture of Poplar Bluff with Zoellner Construction as contractor.
