CARBONDALE, Ill. (KBSI) – A Carbondale man faces charges after police responded to a reported fight between several juveniles and adults near a school on October 4.

Keith S. Smith, 37, charges of aggravated battery and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

City of Carbondale police officers responded to the 100 block of North Parrish Lane near Parrish School on Oct. 4 at 3:54 p.m. regarding a report of a man with a gun.

Officers learned there was an altercation between several juveniles and adults at a home across the street from the school that moved down the street to a parking lot, according to Carbondale police.

Some of those involved left before officers arrived.

A caller, who was not present when it happened, indicated a firearm was involved, but that has not been substantiated, according to police.

One of the involved people had a minor injury.

There is no indication this incident is related to Parrish School in any way, but there were several officers on the scene for a period of time to ensure that it was not. Officers requested Parrish School go on lockdown as a precautionary measure.

Detectives, with the assistance of the Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office, applied for and received an arrest warrant for Smith.

Detectives found Smith on October 6 and arrested him.

He was released pending court.

The investigation remains active an ongoing.
