Sports Zone Oct. 7, 2023: Yankus wins 200th game as head coach, Jackson football keeps rolling
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – The Southeast Missouri State University volleyball team swept Tennessee Martin on Saturday.
After winning the first two sets 25-20, 25-17, respectively, SEMO found itself in a dogfight, or a hawkfight, in the third set.
With the score tied at 22, Kaelyn O’Brien’s kill gave SEMO a 23-22 lead.
On the very next point, Talia Gouard and Kayla Closset teamed up for a block off the swing of UT Martin’s Olivia Saunders.
UT Martin won the next point to get it to 24-23, but at match point, the Skyhawks could not get the ball back over the net, and that was all she wrote.
SEMO swept UT Martin for the second straight day, and head coach Julie Yankus won her 200th career game in the process.
The Redhawks improve to 13-4 overall and 5-1 in conference play. They have now won 10 of their last 11 matches, and they will hit the road to Nashville to take on Tennessee State next Friday and Saturday.
In high school football, Jackson notched its third straight shutout with a 70-point drubbing of Confluence Prep Academy. The Indians scored a combined 176 points in those three games. Jackson will welcome 5-2 Holt to town on Friday the 13th for its final home game of the season.
