PADUCAH, Ky. (KBSI) – Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) and Kentucky State Police Division of Commercial Vehicle Enforcement remind long-haul truck drivers to stay on routes established as appropriate for the weight and size of their vehicles.

KYTC District 1 in Paducah and Kentucky State Police Post 1 in Mayfield have increased efforts to deter semi-tractor trailers from attempting shortcuts on rural secondary roads not designed for large cross-country trucks.

In the past three years there were 119 crashes, 40 injury and five deadly crashes along just over 16 miles of KY 286. About 30 of the crashes involved a semi or “STAA truck,” according to KYTC. Of the 24 recent crashes on KY 286 around half involved commercial trucks.

“No Truck” signs were installed at each end of KY 286 and at state highway intersections. Commercial Vehicle Enforcement (CVE) officers have increased patrols and written citations, according to KYTC.

When cases came to district court, the judge expressed the need for the signage. CVE Officer Mark Townsend asked KYTC District 1 for signs to be installed.

Cross-country truckers traveling between Wickliffe and Paducah should follow U.S. 60 to avoid restricted sections, according to KYTC. The signs and restrictions do not apply to local farmers or trucks making local deliveries.

GPS apps also contribute to semi trucks ending up on restricted routes because the app does not mark low overpasses, denote narrow roadways and other obstacles trucks should avoid.

District 1 Chief District Engineer Kyle Poat recommends purchasing a GPS unit or map app programmed to direct over-the-road trucks to the National Truck Network.

KYTC asks websites for long-haul truckers to help alert commercial drivers of hazards  navigating with phone maps not designed for semi trucks.

KYTC recommends the following GPS Map resources for Truckers:
