Community members share stories of trauma and recovery
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – Survivor Stories: In Their Own Words is an event that sold out quickly in Cape Girardeau.
Six area survivors of addiction, incarceration, eating disorders, breast cancer and more shared their stories Thursday, Oct. 26 with the community in a raw and unfiltered night on stage.
One speaker is Laura Emmons, who is the Clinical Coordinator at the Gibson Center for Behavioral Change. She shares her story on recovery from an eating disorder.
“The more insight that we can get out there, then treatment professionals, family members and friends, everyone can have a better idea of what they’re looking at,” said Emmons.
Each speaker shared their story for around 15 minutes. Emmons says that the more people share in their trauma, the less shame and guilt people begin to feel and thus starting the process of healing.
