Tips for safe Halloween decorations
JACKSON, Mo. (KBSI) – Halloween brings with it many decorations, and some that move or light up or make sounds.
With these decorations comes an increased reliance on power outlets which can easily turn into a dangerous situation.
An estimated 9,200 fires were reported to fire departments over a three-day period during Halloween 2017, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.
Firefighters with the Jackson Fire Department say there are steps you can take to avoid becoming a statistic.
“Avoiding open flame is the best way to avoid any fire,” said Gabrielle Rianustis, a firefighter with Jackson Fire Department. “That includes drapes or anything near that includes decorations on your front porch or if you have a jack-o-lantern avoiding those open flames is a good start.”
Jackson firefighters advise never leaving a decoration plugged in overnight or while you’re not home so if something does catch on fire you’re aware and get it under control quickly.
