Some nursing home facilities encourage trick or treating

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – Door to door trick or treating seems be a thing of the past as trunk or treats and events have become more popular.

If you haven’t made those Halloween plans yet the Missouri Veterans’ home of Cape Girardeau is just one of the nursing facilities who will have residents anxiously waiting for trick or treaters on Halloween Night.

“It is a big deal our Veterans really enjoy when the community comes in and this is just a great opportunity for a lot of people in the community to come in,” said Kristen Pind, volunteer coordinator for Missouri Veterans Home.

To some residents these little visitors are the only ones they get. To others it’s just a joy fun night they wait for all year.

“It doesn’t matter if they have someone come visit them every day or if they have someone come visit them once a year,” said Pind. “Just the interaction with the community and especially kids just brings a smile to their face.”

The Chaffee Nursing Center, the Lutheran Home of Cape Girardeau, and Heartland Care and Rehab Center of Cape Girardeau are just a few other care facilities that have residents handing out candy on Halloween.

The Missouri Veterans Home will have their doors open from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Halloween night regardless of weather.
