Cape Girardeau Police Department warns community about scam calls targeting women

CAPE GIRARDEAU Mo. (KBSI) – Law enforcement urges the community to be cautious of scam calls targeting women in the Bootheel area.

Cape Girardeau Police have been notified of an individual impersonating an officer while targeting a specific demographic.

“It appears this individual is targeting women, in their early to mid-twenties, is the information that we’ve received,” said Bobby Newton with the Cape Girardeau Police Department.

During the phone call, the suspect is advising an individual that they have a warrant for their arrest and requesting to meet up with them to take care of the warrant.

“They would be charged with impersonating a police officer, which is critical to us because we go through tons of training and have the experience and we don’t our name getting out there and have a bad name,” said Newton.

Officers advise anyone who receives a scam call to hang up and immediately contact to Cape Girardeau Police Department or law enforcement directly.
