Sports Zone Jan. 6, 2024: SEMO men’s basketball, SIU women’s hoops notch wins at home

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – The Southern Illinois women’s basketball team welcomed Missouri Valley Conference foe Valparaiso to town, while the Southeast Missouri State men’s basketball team hosted NAIA school Bethel at the Show Me Center on Saturday.
The Redhawks improved to 6-2 at home with a 71-61 victory. The Redhawks found themselves trailing by 6 early, but they came back to take a one-point lead at halftime and pulled away in the second half.
Josh Earley led the Redhawks with 14 points. Evan Eursher had 13 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists off the bench.
The Redhawks will stay at home to face Lindenwood on Thursday.
Across the river in Carbondale, the Saluki ladies were trying to snap a three-game losing streak, and they did just that, notching a 75-66 victory over the Valparaiso Beacons.
Laniah Randle had 16 points in the first half and finished with a game-high 24. SIU improved to 6-7 overall and 1-2 in MVC play.
The Salukis will hit the road to Normal for a date with Illinois State on Wednesday. They won’t play at the Banterra Center again until Jan. 19 against Indiana State.
