Sports Zone February 3, 2024: SEMO basketball hosts Western Illinois, SIU men’s basketball pulls off another comeback

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – The Southeast Missouri State men’s and women’s basketball teams played host to Western Illinois at the Show-Me Center on Saturday afternoon.

The SEMO ladies trailed by 9 at halftime and trimmed that deficit to 1 early in the fourth quarter, but the Leathernecks pulled away late to a 70-59 win.

Jaliyah Green led the Redhawks with 19 points, and Kiyley Flowers pitched in 16 points.

During the men’s game, the 2023 SEMO Athletics Hall of Fame Class was recognized, a class that included six SEMO greats from five different sports.

As for the basketball action, the Redhawks’ only lead was at 3-2 as the Leathernecks improved to 8-2 in Ohio Valley Conference play with a 76-55 road victory.

Both the men’s and women’s Redhawks squads will take on Tennessee Tech Thursday night at the Show Me Center.

In the Windy City, the SIU men’s basketball team pulled off yet another comeback in crunch time, erasing a seven-point deficit in the final four minutes to defeat Illinois Chicago, 74-71.

Xavier Johnson poured in 29 points, 18 of those coming at the free throw line. He went 10-for-10 from the charity stripe in those final four minutes.
