Sports Zone Feb. 17, 2024: Cape Central wins girls swim and dive state championship, college basketball, baseball recap

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – It was quite the week for the Cape Central High School girls swim and dive team at the state championships in St. Peter’s.

The Lady Tigers finished first overall by just 1.5 points, narrowly defeating Clayton, 240-238.5, for the state title. Third place Parkway West finished 70.5 points behind Clayton.

Tommy-Anne Marriott won the state championship in 1 meter diving with a score of 423.85. 

Sydney Ringwald outpaced the field in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle, and the Lady Tigers 400-yard freestyle relay team finished second with a time of 3:39.36.

Laniah Randle of SIU women’s basketball dropped a career-high 36 points as the Salukis snapped a six-game losing skid with an 80-70 victory at Indiana State this afternoon. 

And SEMO women’s basketball picked up a road win at SIU Edwardsville, outlasting the Cougars, 67-57. Alecia Doyle and Jaliyah Green combined for 36 points, and the Redhawks held SIUE to 35 percent shooting. 

SEMO baseball got two home runs from Michael Mugan but dropped the second game of their three-game opening weekend series at Dallas Baptist. The Redhawks will try to avoid the sweep on Sunday at 1 pm. 

SIU baseball is off to a strong start. They have won the first two games of their series at Northwestern State.

SIU softball is competing in the Spring Games in Leesburg, Fla., this weekend. SEMO softball is participating in the Lion Classic in Hammond, La.
