Man facing assault, weapons charges in Cape Girardeau

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – A man faces assault and weapons charges after police responded to a report of shots fired in Cape Girardeau on March 4.

Jaleel Montel Henry faces charges of class B felony of assault in the first degree, class A felony of unlawful use of a weapon, two counts of felony of armed criminal action and class D felony of unlawful possession of a firearm.

Cape Girardeau police officers responded to the area of William and South Benton streets for a report of shots fired. Officers found several spend 9mm shell casings.

Officers were later notified a victim was at a Cape Girardeau hospital.

The victim was driving his vehicle north on South Benton at William and was crossing William when he heard shots. He told police his rear windshield was broken by the shots and he felt pain in his back. Then he realized he had been shot in the back. The victim drove himself to a hospital for treatment.

Police say the bullet hit the victim at a low speed after it penetrated the vehicle and drivers seat before striking him.

Officers say the suspect hid a Taurus G3 9mm handgun under a tarp. While searching the area, officers found a red jacket in a chase above some shell casings.

They found Henry’s identification in the jacket.

Officers met with a witness on March 6 who provided video surveillance.

The witness positively identified the suspect on the video as Henry.
