Franklin County sheriff warns of letter scam

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ill. (KBSI) – The Franklin County sheriff warns the public of a scam that has affected numerous Franklin County residents.
Residents are urged to be cautious of any letter claiming to be from an attorney or law office, in particular the Law Office of Jim Braiden, according to Franklin County Sheriff Kyle Bacon.
The letter claims that a distant relative passed away and the relative’s life insurance has not been claimed. The letter promises there are large sums of money to be claimed.
Once the person makes contact with the law office, the person on the other end of the phone asks you to provide very specific personal information that includes banking information.
Anyone who receives a letter similar to this is asked to not contact the “law office” and do not provide personal information.
