SEMO Future Teacher Day welcomes next generation of Missouri educators

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI)- Southeast Missouri State University will introduce more than 175 school students from 14 different schools from around the region to the teaching profession during the 3rd Annual Future Teacher Day on Friday, April 12.
Future Teacher Day is a chance for any high school student interested in pursuing education to visit SEMO, explore their options and opportunities, and learn more about their prospects as future educators.
“SEMO works very hard to prepare new educators for the evolving demands of the workforce particularly through the integration of technology into teaching,” said associate dean of Educator Preparation Buddy Alberson. “Our emphasis on technology and field experiences provides students with valuable skills that set them apart in the competitive field of education.”
The day starts with a welcome and then features activities across campus, opportunities to talk to faculty and students, campus tours, and lunch. It will highlight Southeast’s EDvolution Center, a resource and technology facility focusing on experiential learning opportunities for students.
“Understanding how technology is used in surrounding school districts is critical, as it ensures that future educators are well-prepared for the tools and methods they will encounter in real-world teaching environments,” said Alberson.
SEMO is just one of 32 higher education institutions in the nation to be named an Apple Distinguished School because of its innovative and technology-driven education.
“Preparing teachers in Missouri is imperative because it directly influences the quality of education, student outcomes, and the overall development of individuals and communities,” said Alberson. “It ensures that educators are well-equipped to navigate the challenges of modern education and positively impact the lives of their students.”
According to numbers from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), there were nearly 4,000 teacher vacancies in the state of Missouri in elementary and special education in 2023. Addressing these shortages remains a critical priority.
Alberson encourages anyone interested to sign up for Future Teacher Day and learn how SEMO can prepare them for a successful and rewarding career pursuing their passion. Students may register on the Special Events webpage.
