Cape Central Middle School students celebrate solar eclipse
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – The Cape Central Tigers celebrated the solar eclipse with a lot of fun activities Monday.
Some young minds at Central Middle School now say the eclipse has them thinking about their future careers.
“Yes, actually my dream job is to work at NASA,” said 5th grader Claire Boyer.
Fifth grade students from Cape Central Middle School now dream of careers in science after watching Monday’s total solar eclipse.
“Well, yeah I kind of want to be a scientist,” said middler schooler Fadedrick Taylor-Muse.
Amanda Zweigart is their teacher.
“I taught here in 2017, and we watched it out here as well and it’s just as always fascinating,” said Zweigart. “I mean that’s part of why I became a science teacher, and it’s just a very fascinating thing to me and it’s cool to see the kids get excited about it.”
She says teachers prepared students for the day with lessons on how the eclipse would take place.
“Um yeah we had like a lesson where we talked about how the moon goes between the Sun and the Earth, and the Moon seems closer to the Earth, so that’s what makes the sun and the moon, look very alike, and the same thing but really, mostly the Sun is bigger than the Moon,” said Taylor-Muse.
The number one lesson for students making sure the kids know to wear the proper eye gear to view the eclipse.
“Making sure they wear their glasses, knowing that they can get damage to their eyes, that’s a big part of it,” said Zweigart.
Many schools in the area were in session for the eclipse, allowing students to see the rare event together.
