Better Business Bureau gives tips on finding trustworthy contractors

ST. LOUIS, Mo., – Warm weather inspires homeowners to get started on projects they couldn’t complete during the winter months. Better Business Bureau can help you find a trustworthy business to get the job done.

“Hiring the right contractor is one of the most important things you can do to make sure your home improvement project goes smoothly,” said Michelle L. Corey, BBB St. Louis president and CEO. “Start with contractors who have been vetted by BBB, and research thoroughly before you sign a contract or pay a company.”

BBB commonly receives reports from consumers who paid a deposit for home improvement work, only for the work to not be completed in a quality manner, on time, or at all.

Over 4,200 consumers submitted complaints to BBB about general contractors last year.

In May 2023, a Lake St. Louis consumer contracted a company for cabinet installation and closet work in her home with an upfront deposit of $2,810.

The contractor told her that the work would be done in a few weeks and cashed the check the same day, but never returned to begin the work.

The customer tried to contact them repeatedly over the next three months and was told her project was being delayed due to other commitments.

Eventually, the contractor apologized and said they would return her deposit but did not return it.
