Veterans’ welcome home ceremony held in Marion

MARION Ill. (KBSI) – A big welcome home celebration, for veterans coming from Washington D.C., takes place at the Veterans Airport Tuesday evening.

The ceremony began at 8:45 p.m. with emcee Steve Falat, from River Radio and Matt Throgmorton from Byassee Music and Sound sang the National Anthem.

Vietnam Veteran Jack Dawson, who has been on previous honor flights, says it’s always an honorable feeling to be reminded of his and every other veteran’s service to the country.

“What I remember most about the flight is we left Washington, they played patriotic songs like Proud to be an American. You just felt good about being a veteran.” Said Dawson.

Supporters welcomed each veteran by showcasing welcome home banners and flags, while 87 veterans passed through the freedom path through the airport terminal.

Dawson adds, “You’ve got a smile on your face all day long. It’s just a good feeling and a good time.”

Veterans Honor Flight of Southern Illinois is implemented solely by volunteers with 96.5 cents of every dollar donated going straight to veterans.
