Man suspected in deadly hit-and-run arrested

CARBONDALE, Ill. (KBSI) — A man suspected in a deadly hit-and-run crash was arrested on June 5.

The crash happened on May 31. Carbondale police say it happened at the intersection of Walnut Street and Wall Street.

Detectives identified Jeremy L. Shered, 36, of Carbondale as the suspect who struck Michael Welling. Police say Shered left the area.

Welling died as a result of his injuries. The vehicle involved was found burning on West Pleasant Hill Road on June 1.

Police sought Shered, but did not initially find him.

On Monday, June 3, the Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office assisted in obtaining an arrest warrant for Shered. He is charged with failing to report an accident involving death, arson, reckless homicide involving a motor vehicle, driving while license suspended, obstructing justice, failure to render aid and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Shered was arrested in Carbondale in the afternoon of Wednesday, June 5.

He was taken to the Jackson County Jail.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
