Mayfield Elementary provides hot meals to kids all summer long

MAYFIELD Ky. (KBSI) – Leah Feagin the Food Service Director is providing breakfast and lunch all summer long leading up to the school year.
Leah states, “Well this summer we are doing a tradional summer meal program which is what we’ve done for probably nearly 20 years in this area and we offer meals on site where anyone 18 and under can come and receive a meal breakfast and lunch. What we try to do each summer you know is staff it with our food service employees and we have many employees willing to go ahead and work for the summer.”
Leah then goes to highlight on what the food district does throughout the entire year and how it is possible.
“You know it’s a federally funded program and without that federal funding we would be unable to offer the program so that’s vital to what we do not only in the summer and throughout the school year. Throughout the school year we’re offering breakfast and lunch and after school snacks and supper which are all fed so we’re very aware of the need to encourage that federal funding through our legislators and our community support.”
Alison Abdul-Fattah the Cafeteria Manager at Mayfield Elementary speaks on why she loves her job.
“I really pride myself on doing hot meals every day so like for breakfast and lunch I try to do as many hot meals as I can. If I know there’s programs going on in the school and different stuff, I try to have hot meals because the kids might not get hot meals at home.”
Alison speaks on the feeling she gets when it comes to preparing these lunches.
“It means a lot to me because I know I love seeing the kids and I’ve been here 11 years so it will the kids become part of the program you know and since Covid hit and everything I feel like our numbers have kind of dwindled some but they’re coming back in. They’re coming back now so it’s.”
