Residents speak out about Caruthersville shooting

CARUTHERSVILLE, Mo. (KBSI) –  A weekend house party in Caruthersville turned into a life-changing shooting.

Around 1 a.m. Sunday, July 28, Caruthersville residents were woken up by screams, gun shots and tragic cries early Sunday morning as gun shots were firing just feet from their apartment.

“It seemed like they were firing all around our apartment,” said Brianna Hood

Brianna Hood who lives right next to where the party was being hosted says this is not a safe environment for her and her little ones to live. Hood says she can’t even explain what is going on to her little ones when she can’t believe it herself.

“I would say about 1-1:30 my three year old gets up screaming bloody murder. We had no idea what was going on. My fiancé had gotten off work. He was explaining to me there was caution tape around our apartment. I didn’t have the slightest idea of what was going on. We had spoken with some neighbors and some locals that were here that had either family members or friends that were at the party last night and they explained that three individuals had gotten shot.”

Hood says the police officers on scene helped calm her and her family down but that being that close to a crime scene could’ve taken a turn for the worst. Shey says they are very lucky their apartment was not impacted by bullets.

“We spoke with a police officer this morning as well and he told us that we were very very lucky for our apartment not to be hit,” she said.

Jennifer Davis also lives near the crime scene with her children. She says she and her kids were woken up to screams of bystanders trying to help a woman from bleeding out.

“A guy came walking up and noticed a girl in a car had gotten shot and they laid her up against my car out here,” said Davis. “I heard one of the guys kept screaming they needed belts, I guess to keep the lady from getting too bad out there. ”

Davis and her family were lucky to not be affected by the shooting but her car was not so lucky. Blood, bullets and shattered glass are what remain Davis’s car after a bullet lodged in the head of the driver’s seat.

“Under the car, on the car, shattered the glass and went through the drivers seat of my car and i wasn’t even aware of that until this morning. I was letting them handle her i wasn’t asking about the car or nothing. ”

Several cops join together to continue to investigate the case and make the area feel safer.
