Grace church hosts back to school drive at Salvation Army

CAPE GIRARDEAU Mo. (KBSI) – School is back in session and for four years in a row, Grace Church helps kids and families prepare for the year ahead.

Kendra Bullet is the leader of this event that Grace Church has hosted to help families out before going back to school at The Salvation Army in Cape Girardeau.

“Today we are serving the community by providing students with backpacks, school supplies, free haircuts, free gently used and new clothing and shoes and providing snacks and just having some fun.”

Hosting events in the community helps volunteers feel closer to their faith while doing good for the families of Cape Girardeau.

“Our mission is loving God, serving others and making a difference and when Grace started, we started with serving the community. It started with a hot meal and now we get to do Back to school bash and different events in the community and this is where we belong and we are just going to continue to make a difference.”

Some volunteers like Talia Bowman have been doing this for years.

“I’ve always been involved in helping and serving people and so being with the church that gives you the opportunity to get plugged in the hands and feet of Jesus, come to the community, talk, hand out food, just be a bright light that you can be in. it really makes me feel just good knowing that you’re getting back and that my times are going to something that is better impacting the community.”

Bowman says it warms her heart when she has time to play with the kids and they give her hugs, she says that’s what it’s all about.

“This is like just one giant family. We’re all super Duper close so yeah, it’s really great.”
