ISP Patrol vehicle and trooper injured in crash on I-24

JOHNSON COUNTY. Ill. (KBSI) – Illinois State Police are investigating a traffic crash in Johnson County involving an ISP trooper who was hit by a motorist who failed to move over.

According to the Illinois State Police on October 17, 2024, at 3:50 pm an ISP trooper 10 was parked with their emergency lights directing traffic for a truck tractor semi fire on the right shoulder of interstate 24 east bound near mile marker 21 in Grantsburg, Illinois.

Approaching traffic failed to reduce speed in time and a separate three vehicle crash occurred near the trooper.

Directly after another truck-tractor semi-trailer swerved near the shoulder to avoid the crash that had just occurred but instead side swiped the trooper’s vehicle.

The squad cars driver side was scratched, and the mirror was broken. The trooper was inside the vehicle and the trooper was injured.

The driver of the truck tractor semi-trailer was identified as 36-year-old Andrii Riabchun of Chicago.

He was cited for the move over law- failure to yield to a stopped emergency vehicle.

Ther investigation is ongoing.
