Family dog receives oxygen after saving family from house fire

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – A family dog is a hero after alerting its owners of a fire in the early morning hours allowing them to wake up and get out of the house.
According to the Cape Girardeau Fire Department around 12:55 am on the morning of December 22, 2024, Cape Girardeau Firefighters responded to a reported residential first alarm structure fire on Camellia Drive.
Crews arrived to find a ranch style residence with fire visible from the garage and the attic.
The incident was upgraded to a working fire which brought in several mutual aid from Jackson Fire Rescue, Gordonville Fire Protection District, and Scott City Fire Department to help with operations and cover the city while all units were committed to this incident.
The fire was brought under control within approximately 25 minutes of arrival, but extensive overhaul operations were conducted for several hours to make sure the fire was completely extinguished.
No injuries were reported.
The residents were initially alerted of the fire by the family dog. She then hid under a bed and was rescued by firefighters while searching the rooms during the fire. Responding departments say they are thankful for Jackson Fire Rescue for assisting with the care of this heroic dog, utilizing a specially designed Pet Oxygen Mask.
