Cape Girardeau woman charged with child neglect resulting in death

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — Alyssa N. Wehmeyer, 21, of Cape Girardeau, was formally charged Monday with one count of Abuse or Neglect of a Child – Resulting in Death.
The charge stems from an investigation by the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control, which began after the Cape Girardeau Police Department requested assistance in investigating the suspicious death of a one-year-old child.
According to investigators, the child died due to severe malnutrition and neglect. Wehmeyer was taken into custody and transported to the Scott County Jail. She is being held on a $100,000 cash bond.
The Cape Girardeau Prosecuting Attorney’s office filed the formal charge after reviewing the patrol’s investigation. Wehmeyer’s guilt or innocence will be determined in court.
