Mercy Southeast recognizes longstanding volunteer for National Volunteer Week

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – National Volunteer Week runs from April 20-26 to recognize the vital role volunteers play in many areas.

Volunteering can be a great way to make a positive impact on your community.

Mercy Southeast Hospital is recognizing a long-standing volunteer who has dedicated nearly 5o years of volunteer service.

Shirley Waterman has been a volunteer at Mercy Southeast since 1978. She shares her motivation behind being a long-term volunteer.

I started volunteering here in 1978 and the reason why is because my husband had a heart attack and while he was in here there were volunteers that came in to talk to him and I just thought: “I think that’s something I can do!” says Waterman.

Waterman has worked as a volunteer in multiple areas throughout the hospital over the years, but she says she found the surgical waiting room to be her favorite.

“I love talking to the people, The people did need someone because they were coming in for family members. Some of them were very upset or if you could just go talk to them or offer them a cup of coffee” says Waterman. “They really appreciated it and I felt like my hours that was spent there were very very rewarding.”

Waterman saying volunteering is a great way to give back to the community and make a positive impact on others.

Waterman tells me that through volunteering she has found a sense of purpose that has motivated her to be a volunteer for nearly 50 years now and she doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon.

She encourages others to volunteer as well.

Try volunteering. I think you would love to do it if you give it a try. Be like me, go to different areas, and see what you would like to do.

Mercy Southeast is currently needing volunteers in multiple areas.

From the cancer center to the front desk, and much more.
