Cape Public Schools add safety protocols for high school graduation ceremony

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – Almost a year ago two people were injured in a shooting that took place outside of Cape Centrals Graduation at the Cape Girardeau Show Me Center now the school is sharing enhanced safety protocols families can expect to see at this year’s graduation.

Assistant Superintendent Josh Crowell says they have been implementing safety protocols all year long and student and family safety is their top priority.

This year everyone will have to go through a weapons detection system, and only clear bags will be allowed inside.

Crowell says they ask families not to bring things like balloons or noise makers or gifts inside this year.

“We don’t want a family in there with well intentions brings a big bouquet of flowers or balloons and an individual three rows behind them can’t see what’s going on, on the stage” says Crowell.

Cape Centrals graduation will take place tomorrow Friday May 16, 2025 at 7:00 pm at the Central Junior High.

Another addition this year is tickets. Each graduating student received 9 tickets for family members. Only those with a ticket is allowed entry to graduation.

Additionally, Cape Police Department and Resource Officers will be patrolling around the school’s campus.

We do want to ensure that the ceremony that takes place is a very dignified ceremony for our graduates. It’s very earned and very deserved says Crowell.
