Amtrak train service relocates to new facility in Carbondale
CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — Amtrak will begin serving passengers at the Southern Illinois Multimodal Station (SIMMS) on May 20, marking the completion of Phase 1 of the project.
The new station, located at 401 South Illinois Avenue, features a passenger drop-off and pick-up area, a spacious waiting room and a pet area accessible from the platform.
Phase 1 also includes space for Man-Tra-Con Corporation, a local employment assistance provider, and will soon host a co-working space.
Construction on Phase 2 is set to begin on May 21, and will include office space for JAX Mass Transit, Carbondale Tourism and Southern Illinois University.
The City of Carbondale plans to schedule a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the SIMMS upon completion of Phase 2.
Amtrak personnel will be on-site to assist customers during the transition to the new station.
