Carbondale to host annual Memorial Day service at Woodlawn Cemetery
CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — The City of Carbondale will host its annual Memorial Day service at Woodlawn Cemetery on May 26 at 10 a.m.
The service, led by Mayor Carolin Harvey, will honor individuals who have died defending the nation. The ceremony will include an invocation by Reverend John Annable, a Memorial Day address by Betsy Brown, and performances by the Carbondale Fire Department, Company C of the 31st Illinois Volunteer Infantry, and the Carbondale Police Honor Guard.
A self-guided walking tour through historic Woodlawn Cemetery will follow the service, featuring brief biographies of notable veterans.
Woodlawn Cemetery is reportedly the site of the first Memorial Day service in Illinois, held on April 29, 1866.
