Area firefighters contain late-night commercial blaze
JACKSON, Mo., (KBSI) — Firefighters responded to a commercial structure fire at Sweetheart Florist, 119 S. High St., just after 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Upon arrival, crews upgraded the fire to a second alarm due to heavy smoke and fire, and the building’s construction. Two Jackson fire units made entry through the front and back doors, encountering zero visibility and heavy fire.
The fire was later upgraded to a third alarm, bringing in multiple departments and aerial ladder trucks. Crews battled the fire from multiple angles until the roof began collapsing, forcing them to temporarily retreat.
Two firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion at the scene, and a third was transported to St. Francis Medical Center for evaluation and later released.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office was requested to investigate, but no findings have been reported.
Crews remained on scene until 2 a.m., hitting hotspots and overhauling the structure. One business sustained major fire damage and was a total loss, while another had fire damage to the roof line. Nearby businesses had smoke and minor water damage.
The fire department expressed appreciation for the community’s cooperation and mutual aid companies’ assistance.
