FBI investigates vandalism in Southern Illinois

Paul Sime Federal Building

CARBONDALE, Ill. (KBSI) –The FBI is investigating after the Paul Simon federal building in Carbondale was vandalized.

US States Attorney of the Southern Illinois District Steven Weinhoeft says those responsible will be prosecuted to the fullest.

“I want to give credit to both the FBI who is aggressively investing the matter right now while the damage to the building itself wasn’t terribly severe the underlying incident itself is something we take extremely seriously.”

According to reports the incident happened on the afternoon of June 10, 2025, and it is unknown at this time the reason behind the vandalism.

“There is no excuse, and we will not tolerate individuals who target federal buildings, federal property or federal officials for retaliation for them doing their jobs” says Weinhoeft.

I asked us attorney Weinhoft if he believed this incident was related to recent protests happening throughout the United States,
“I think that’s a really easy question to answer” says Weinhoeft.  “This had nothing to do with a protest. Protest and speech are simply an exchange of ideas and expressions of traditional obvious matters of free speech but there’s a very clear and bright line that separates the exchange of ideas from individuals who take that next step and make acts of violence.”

Those with any information related to the incident are encouraged to contact the FBI.
