2 miners injured: rock falls from ceiling in coal mine

PICKNEYVILLE, Ill., (KBSI) — Two miners were injured when a rock fell from the ceiling at the Prairie Eagle Mine in Perry County.

According to Knight Hawk Coal, the accident occurred Monday night at the underground coal mine. The two men suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were flown to hospitals in Carbondale and St. Louis.

CEO Josh Carter said in a statement that emergency personnel acted quickly to get the men medical attention.

“The employees of Knight Hawk Coal spend many hours on safety training and emergency response,” Carter said. “Their dedication was on full display last night.”

Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including Air Evac, ARCH, Perry County Ambulance Service and the Perry County Sheriff’s Office.

The mine is operated by Knight Hawk Coal.
