Southeast Missouri schools launch Hope Squad Program
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — Several schools in southeastern Missouri are launching the Hope Squad program, a peer-to-peer suicide prevention initiative aimed at improving mental wellness support for students.
The program, funded by grants from the Community Foundation of the Ozarks, will be implemented in seven schools in the Cape Girardeau and Perryville areas, including Cape Central High School and Perryville High School.
Hope Squad trains student leaders to identify peers struggling with mental health challenges or suicidal thoughts and connect them with trusted adults and mental health professionals.
The program aims to destigmatize mental health conversations, foster a culture of support and ultimately save lives.
“We are excited to bring the Hope Squad program to our local schools,” said Kyle Schott, Administrative Projects Specialist from Community Counseling Center. “The mental well-being of our youth is paramount, and this program provides a proactive and empowering approach to suicide prevention.”
The Community Counseling Center and Cape Girardeau Public Schools are partnering to implement the program, which will provide comprehensive training to selected advisors from each school.
The Hope Squad program is a nationally recognized initiative that empowers students to identify and refer peers at risk of suicide to trusted adults.
