Shawnee Park Sports Complex to undergo major expansion
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — The city is set to break ground on a major expansion of the Shawnee Park Sports Complex, marking a significant milestone in its efforts to solidify its position as a premier sports tourism destination.
The expansion, which will be celebrated with a ceremonial groundbreaking on Friday, includes the addition of five youth-sized baseball and girls’ fast-pitch softball fields with artificial turf infields. Two soccer/football fields will also be built to replace existing ones at the site.
The project is expected to enhance the city’s ability to attract larger state, regional, and national tournaments, while also providing improved facilities for local youth league divisions.
Cape Girardeau has established itself as a major sports tourism destination over the past 25 years, with the Shawnee Park Sports Complex playing a key role since its inception in 1997. The expansion of the complex is the latest development in the city’s ongoing efforts to grow its sports tourism industry.
