Two dead, five injured in Mt. Vernon Shooting, one arrest has been made

MT. VERNON, Ill. (KBSI) — A shooting early Sunday morning in Mt. Vernon left two people dead and five others injured, according to the Mt. Vernon police department.

Officers from the Mt. Vernon Police Department responded to reports of gunfire around 12:49 a.m. in the 600 block of South 15th Street.

Emergency crews from the Mt. Vernon Fire Department, Litton Ambulance, and United Medical Response also responded to the scene.

Upon arrival, officers discovered multiple individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. Victims were quickly transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Authorities confirmed that two people died in the shooting, recently releasing their identities as Zomarrius Williams, 20, of Mt. Vernon, and Demonta Woodward, 26, of Mounds IL.

Five others sustained injuries and are receiving medical treatment.

Jerria J. Smith, 22, of Mt. Vernon, has been arrested in connection with the shooting. She is charged with reckless discharge of a firearm and obstruction of justice.


Police said the investigation remains on-going, and more arrests and charges are expected.

“We are still in the early stages of this investigation and will continue to develop leads and evidence,” said Assistant Chief Travis Chapman in a release on Facebook. “This senseless gun violence has tragically caused loss of life and injuries to others.”

The Mt. Vernon Police Department thanked the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the Illinois State Police for their assistance.

The identities of the remaining victims have not been released.

All individuals are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
